Athletics and Recreation

Rutgers–New Brunswick is proud to be Scarlet Knights country. Fielding 24 NCAA Division I Big Ten sports teams, the campus offers great spectating in football and men’s and women’s basketball, as well as in baseball, soccer, lacrosse, wrestling, gymnastics, and more. We also have open spaces for outdoor recreation. Here’s a sampling of athletics and recreation venues.

Athletic traditions at Rutgers run deep: the first intercollegiate football game pitted Rutgers against Princeton on November 6, 1869. Rutgers prevailed 6 to 4. Today, home games take place in a stadium seating more than 52,000 people. A sea of red typically surrounds the playing field.

Rutgers Athletic Center (“RAC”)

The basketball arena at the Louis Brown Athletic Center boasts clear sight lines and tremendous acoustics, making the 8,000 roaring fans in the stands feel like they are right on the court with the Scarlet Knights.

Rutgers University Golf Course

Busch campus
777 Hoes Lane West, Piscataway, NJ
Over 6,300 yards in length, our PGA sanctioned course—rated 4½ stars by Golf Digest magazine and the #6 college golf course in the nation—is a par 71 and offers a challenging layout with four teeing areas per hole. Highlights include narrow fairways, fast greens, and water hazards on nine holes.
Open to the general public from March 1 through December 15, 6:30 a.m. (6 a.m. on weekends) until dusk.

Rutgers Gardens

Rutgers Gardens, above, offers 180 acres of lush fl owers, plants, and trees, including a magical bamboo forest, a rhododendron and azalea display garden, and an ornamental tree collection. Adjoining are the trails of the Frank G. Helyar Woods and the 92-acre Weston’s Mill Pond.

Rutgers Ecological Preserve

Livingston campus
Piscataway, NJ
The Rutgers Ecological Preserve, a 316-acre tract of land, is one of the largest contiguous expanses of forest in central New Jersey. It provides habitat for many species of wild animals and birds. It is open to hikers and nature enthusiasts of all ages. A trail map is available online under the “About RUEP” tab.
