Humanities Building-Academics/Research
UC Santa Cruz has five academic divisions: Humanities, Social Sciences, Arts, Physical & Biological Sciences and the Jack Baskin School of Engineering. UC Santa Cruz is committed to interdisciplinary study, which helps our students explore how multiple areas of students intersect. We offer 75 majors and 44 minors between our five divisions, and are constantly adding more.
UC Santa Cruz operates on a quarter system. There are three quarters in our academic year (fall, winter, and spring), and summer quarter is optional, but a great way to catch up or get ahead. In general, students will take about three classes each quarter for a total of 15 credits per quarter. Quarters are only ten weeks long, so these three classes will go fast and be more work.
Over 70% of our undergraduate students participate in research, which is offered in every department at UC Santa Cruz. Because UCSC is a global research university, active participation in research should be an integral part of your education to help you explore careers as well as gain real world experience.
