Come See Us To Believe It

Welcome to UWM! We’ve highlighted a recommended route for you. However, you can begin your tour at any point on campus. All of our buildings have been numbered with corresponding descriptions below. We encourage you to check out the buildings labeled with gold numbers as they are locations that our students frequently visit during their time as UWM Panthers or as they prepare to become one.

Please feel free to enter the buildings as you explore campus. You can stop in our Panther Shop in the UWM Student Union to get some gear or head to one of our many Grind locations for a cup of coffee. Don’t forget to check out the amazing photo opportunities on campus.

Office of Undergraduate Admissions

While discovering all that UWM has to offer, don’t hesitate to stop by the UWM Welcome Center (1) to register for a guided tour, meet with an admissions advisor or get questions answered. You can also stop by the Office of Undergraduate Admissions in Vogel Hall (11) to complete any steps of your admissions process.

The Welcome Center is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and during the academic year we are also open on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

1. Lubar Entrepreneurship Center/UWM Welcome Center

The Lubar Entrepreneurship Center along with the UWM Welcome Center is built on an array of programs – Ideas Challenge Programming – that spans levels and disciplines. These programs built on UWM’s foundation in research are creating a focal point for entrepreneurship education oncampus and a pipeline of talent and resources for growing businesses in our region.

2. Lubar Hall

The Lubar School of Business has been continuously accredited by AACSB International for over 45 years and offers students one of the best business educations in Wisconsin. Lubar Hall provides students with private computer labs, specialized career services and the David O. Nicholas Applied Finance Lab.

3. UWM Student Union

The Union is the exciting center of student life and activity on campus. Inside you will find the Panther Shop, the Union Cinema, the Rec Center, the UW Credit Union, a food court, offices for student organizations and many student-life offices and resource centers.

4. Bolton Hall

Bolton Hall houses multiple multicultural resource centers, the Office of Undergraduate Research and the Student Success Center. Bolton 150, one of the larger lecture halls at UWM, can be found on the first floor.

5. Helene Zelazo Center for the Performing Arts

Once the Congregation Emanu-El B’ne Jeshurun’s synagogue, this building has become a rehearsal, classroom and performance space for our music and dance programs. The Helene Zelazo Center also houses the Helen Bader Concert Hall and Mary L. Nohl Art Galleries.

6. Mellencamp Hall

Mellencamp Hall is where you will find the offices of the Registrar and Financial Aid, Career Planning and Resource Center, New Student Programs, the Testing Center and the admission operations and processing area.

7. Mitchell Hall

Originally the main building for the Milwaukee State Normal School, Mitchell Hall now houses The Graduate School, the Accessibility Resource Center, art and dance studios, the film department and the bursar’s or cashier’s office. In 2017, the Emile H. Mathis Gallery opened here, to display and house the expanding UWM art collection.

8. The Arts Center

The Arts Center building is home to the Peck School of the Arts, the only comprehensive art school in the state of Wisconsin. This building houses the theatre, music and art departments. The Arts Center also hosts several performances throughout the year at the Mainstage Theatre, located on the first floor.

9. Golda Meir Library

Named for Golda Meir, the first female prime minister of Israel who spent most of her formative years in Milwaukee, this library has the distinction of being the largest library under one roof in Wisconsin. Students also can find the American Geographical Society Library, which has over 1.3 million maps, atlases and other data files, here. The Daniel M. Soref Learning Commons, on the first floor of the west wing, features group study rooms, the largest computer lab on campus, 24-hour access Sunday through Thursday, and a Grind coffee shop. The east wing of the library contains more study space, tutoring and supplemental instruction for introductory courses.

10. Curtin Hall

Named for Jeremiah Curtin, who was said to have mastered 70 languages, Curtin is where you will find UWM’s foreign language department, which offers 20 different languages including American Sign Language. The English and philosophy departments, as well as the Writing Center can be found in Curtin Hall.

11. Vogel Hall

Built in 1936 as part of the Milwaukee-Downer Seminary campus, Vogel Hall is now the home of the Office of Undergraduate Admissions.

12. Garland/Pearse Halls

Originally part of the Milwaukee-Downer Seminary campus, Garland and Pearse Halls house the office of the psychology department and the Center for International Education.

13. Holton Hall

Holton Hall is home to the largest college at UWM, the College of Letters & Science (L&S). L&S advises students in more than 40 programs.

14. Merrill Hall

Merrill Hall, which holds the oldest lecture hall on campus, is now home to the offices and classrooms of the College of Letters & Science.

15. Johnston Hall

This iconic building was originally a residence hall for the Milwaukee-Downer College, but now houses offices and classrooms.

16. Greene Hall

Originally the Milwaukee Downer College library, this beautiful building is currently used as a conference/ meeting room for special events. Greene Hall is connected to the back of Merrill Hall.

17. Greene Museum

The Sam and Helen Stahl Greene Museum houses the Center for Jewish Studies, and serves the UWM campus and the Milwaukee community with courses and public events pertaining to Jewish studies.

18. Sabin Hall

Sabin Hall provides office space for the Department of Anthropology, as well as lecture spaces, classrooms and offices.

19. Pavilion/Klotsche Center

Use of this facility is free to all students currently enrolled in classes. A variety of sports and recreation classes are offered at the Klotsche Center. It also features a swimming pool, two separate 1/8-mile tracks, handball and racquetball courts, a gymnasium with four full-sized courts, a fitness center and a cardio room.

20. Downer Woods

Eleven acres of protected woodland make up Downer Woods, where research in natural science, botany and biology is often conducted. All students can enter Downer Woods, but please take only pictures and leave only footprints.

21. Norris Health Center

UWM’s health center provides medical services to all enrolled students. Many services are free of charge, while prescriptions/vaccines, some laboratory tests and selected procedures come with a small fee. Students with an active student ID can use Norris as many times as they need while attending UWM.

22. Enderis Hall

The 11-story building houses three of our 15 schools and colleges: the School of Education, the Helen Bader School of Social Welfare and the College of Health Sciences. The first floor features a student lounge with food service.

23. Chapman Hall

Chapman Hall was originally a library for the Milwaukee-Downer College. It now houses administration offices.

24. Sandburg Hall

The four towers of Sandburg are home for 2,800 students. This community includes its own movie theater, fitness center, computer lab, cafeteria, restaurant, Grind coffee shop, convenience store and the campus police department.

25. Honors House

This building houses the UWM Honors College, with four distinctive classrooms, a private library and a hidden courtyard. Originally the home of the Columbia College of Nursing, its history and atmosphere have been preserved by UWM.

26. Northwest Quadrant

UWM acquired the former Columbia St. Mary’s Hospital in late 2010. The nearly 11 acres include seven buildings, one of which is a five-story parking structure. The School of Information Studies, advising for the College of Health Sciences and the UWM Children’s Learning Center call the Northwest Quadrant home.

27. Architecture and Urban Planning Building

As the only accredited program of architecture in Wisconsin, the School of Architecture and Urban Planning has classrooms, student studio lab space, a full metal and wood shop and multiple 3D printers. This building was designed specifically for architecture and urban planning students.

28. Lapham Hall

Students say this building rocks because of the geology department, which houses a seismograph to measure earthquakes worldwide. Zoology, biology and other natural science departments also are located within Lapham. There is a taxidermy hallway on the first floor.

29. Engelmann Hall

UWM’s indoor field is located in the west wing of this building. It is used for courses, leagues, tournaments and scheduled programs. Engelmann Hall also is home to the university’s Department of Human Resources and includes an auditorium for lectures.

30. Cunningham Hall

The largest nursing program in the state of Wisconsin can be found here. Bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral programs give students experience with cutting-edge research in health care.

31. Laura Moynihan Field at Engelmann Stadium

Both the men’s and women’s soccer teams use this field with a two-star rating from FIFA, the highest rating for a synthetic field. That makes it one of the best college soccer environments in the country.

32. Chemistry Building

The four-story classroom section houses lecture halls and laboratories. The eight-story tower has research facilities and offices. Even if you are not studying chemistry, you may have classes in this building.

33. Engineering and Mathematical Sciences Building (EMS)

EMS contains laboratories, research facilities and the Johnson Controls Energy Advancement Research Lab, which gives students an opportunity to work with scientists to conduct research. This dry lab is the largest of its kind in North America.

34. Physics Building

Here, students can look at the stars at the Manfred Olson Planetarium, which has weekly shows. Students can partake in roof-top stargazing and observe space with astronomy equipment. The Physics building also houses offices and classrooms.

35. Kenwood Interdisciplinary Research Complex

Opened in 2015, the Kenwood Interdisciplinary Research Complex is an award-winning, green-certified building that houses the Milwaukee Institute for Drug Discovery, as well as space for research projects in areas such as STEM, public health, freshwater sciences, physics and chemistry. In addition, there are several classrooms and faculty offices located here.
